Description
Nutmeg is derived from the seeds of Myristica fragrans, an aromatic evergreen tree that grows to the height of 30-40 ft approx, with spreading branches and fleshy yellow fruits, which looks more like apricot or peach. It is considered to have originated from Banda Islands in the Moluccas of Indonesia, known as Spice Islands.
Nutmeg, also known as Jaiphal, is mainly used as spice to give aromatic flavor to food. Due to its medicinal properties, it has been used in Ayurvedic, Unani and other traditional medicine systems for the treatment of asthma, rheumatism, muscle spasm, atherosclerosis, decreased appetite, diarrhea, paralysis etc.
